In April 2008 the OUR commissioned an independent audit of all mobile telecommunications masts in the Bailiwick. This work followed from a similar audit carried out in 2004. Its purpose was to check that all sites comply with the most stringent international safety standards for emissions levels. Every site which was operational in the Bailiwick in April 2008 was audited during this process.
It is each licensees' responsibility that uses radio spectrum to ensure that the non-ionising (non-radioactive) radiation from its network are within the safety limits specified by the International Commission for Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).
Each mast site in the Bailiwick was audited and measurements were taken of the emissions from it and compared against the ICNIRP standard for safe public exposure. The audit also examined the safety processes and procedures that each licensee has in place to ensure their on-going compliance and to ensure the safety of the public, their own staff and others who may come into contact with mast sites.
